Senate Resolution 56 on Marina del Rey Redevelopment
We ARE Marina del Rey is proud to announce that our Senator, Jenny Oropeza, has introduced Senate Concurent Resolution 56 (SCR 56) calling for a comprehensive update to the Marina del Rey Local Coastal Program (LCP) as recommended by the California Coastal Commission!
A comprehensive LCP update would include the consideration and mitigation of the cumulative environmental and social impacts of Los Angeles County’s piecemeal redevelopment of the Marina. And it would give our community the opportunity to further shape future development.
We hope that the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will now genuinely work with our community to create a responsible master plan for redevelopment that honors the Marina’s mandate for public access and recreation. A plan that protects and enhances the beauty, integrity and financial potential of Marina del Rey.

Jenny, the Marina Peninsula Neighborhood Association represents 1100 households in the Marina del Rey area. Our organization TOTALLY SUPPORTS your resolution requiring LA County to do a comprehensive update of the LCP. The County has acted arrogantly and with TOTAL DISREGARD to the opinions of local residents and has actively sought to eliminate and/or diminish public input. The County is solely interested in serving its own financial interests and those of its lessors and developers. This area cannot support the MASSIVE OVERDEVELOPMENT the County intends which increases residential and vehicular densities by over 400%. Their actions also violate the fundamental charter of Marina del Rey when the property was transferred from the Federal Government to the County of Los Angeles as a resource for public recreation. Many of the planned high rises in the County agenda will take away small boat slips, public parking and will, through the blockage of westerly winds, destroy the sailing opportunities in the Marina because of massive wind shadows these buildings throw. There are also significant environmental impacts to native and endangered species on the coast. None of these issues bother the County Board of Supervisors who wish to proceed on a plan which primarily benefits the special interests of developers and lessors. Please stand firm on your resolution and require the County to comply with the Coastal Act and treat the community that lives here with dignity and respect.
It is my understanding that the Dept of Beaches and Harbors are planning on eliminating the mastup storage area. It has been alleged that they raised the fees by 61% to drive people out of using the storage. There are currently 72 vacancies in the lot and new applicants are being told that the lot is full. The original mission as I understand it was to provide access to boating by the average citizen, am I correct in understanding that the mission is still in place morally and legally?
